K-1 is a combat sport and sport discipline based in Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1993 by Kazuyoshi Ishii, it combines techniques from various sports and martial arts, such as Karate, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, Savate and Boxing. K-1 is especially popular in Japan, where the prestigious K-1 World Grand Prix is held, an event that brings together the best fighters of this specialty.

It was founded in Japan in 1993 by Kazuyoshi Ishii (石井 和義) instructor and master of kyokushin karate. For this reason, during the early years in K-1 they used rules of engagement based on the rules of kyokushin karate.
Since its foundation, the organization has grown and spread all over the world, although the most important tournament "K-1 World Grand Prix" is always held in Japan.
In 2010 the Fuji TV channel filmed in Yokohama for the first time in history the "K-1 World Grand Prix 2010" completely in 3D, becoming the first contact sports tournament filmed entirely in 3D.
K-1 is present on five continents, the championships are watched live by more than 70,000 viewers and the television audience exceeds 25 million people in Japan alone.
